2008-2009 Season

"Opening Night"
September 28, 2008 at 7:OO PM

Servite High School Auditorium, 1952 W. La Palma Avenue, Anaheim

Dimitri Shostakovich Maurice Ravel Antonin Dvorak

Maestro Anthony Parnther makes his debut with the OC Symphony performing works by
three of his favorite composers, Dimitri Shostakovich, Maurice Ravel and Antonin Dvorak.

'Festive Overture' was written to celebrate the Bolshevik uprising which led to the formation
of the Soviet Union, but was it also a secret celebration of the death of Stalin? Ravel was forced
into retirement by illness in the early 1930's, and 'Bolero' was one of his final compositions.
Originally conceived as a Ballet, it surprisingly transformed into Ravel’s most well known
work to date. The 'New World Symphony' was born of an American Spirit, influenced by
Native-American music and African-American spirituals, and remains one of the most played
symphonies in the orchestral repertoire. The OC Symphony is also pleased to present a new work by
composer, Anthony Plog!

Tonight marks a momentous occasion for the OC Symphony and Maestro Parnther. Witness
and become a part their “Opening Night” for the 2008 - 2009 concert season!

Passion. Intrigue. Conflict. Hatred. Love.

the music of four composers. The OCS commences the evening with Sergei Prokofiev’s dramatic
ballet suite commissioned by the Kirov Ballet company in 1935. The ‘Montagues and Capulets’
will be followed by arguably one of the most famous loves themes in cinematic history,
the Suite from the 1968 film adaptation of Romeo and Juliet by Nino Rota. Peter Illych
Tchaikovsky’s compelling and heart wrenching Overture-Fantasy, as inspired by fellow Russian
nationalist Mily Balakirev will be paired with Leonard Bernstein’s own electrifying

"Russian Rebirth"
May 31, 2009 at 7:OO PM

Servite High School Auditorium, 1952 W. La Palma Avenue, Anaheim
Sergei Prokofiev Igor Stravinsky

The OC Symphony has discovered a new and uprising talent in Andrew Haselden,
who will join us in performing one of the most difficult Piano Concertos in orchestral literature.
The ‘Piano Concerto no. 2' in g minor by Sergei Prokofiev debuted in 1913, the same year as
Stravinsky’s controversial and provocative ‘Rite of Spring’, with a similar heated and passionate
crowd reaction. Laced with irony, jagged tension, and manic ferocity, the work has earned it place
among the elite compositions of the 20th century. The 1919 Concert Suite from Igor Stravinsky’s
world-renowned ballet, ‘The Firebird’, will bring the 2008 - 2009 season to an exhilarating close.

We look forward to seeing you, your family and friends there for this spectacular display of talent.
